The Great Western Highway climb over the Blue Mountains between Penrith and Lithgow is narrow, steep in sections and subject to closures in bushfire and winter conditions. Lithgow is a historic NSW rail hub at the junction of the Main Western and Mudgee lines, and it still houses significant rail-related workshops and industrial facilities.
